How Much Will My Website Cost?

by Kieran on August 7, 2009

This may not be the first question you as a customer ask but it is of course foremost to your mind.  You want to spend as little as possible and get the best value for your money.  We are in the middle of a recession so you have a budget.

Fixed Costs

There are some fixed costs for every website that you will encounter no matter who yopu choose to go with for your site design.  One is the domain name registration.  For a .ie domain this is in the region of 20-30 Euro per year.  For a .com domain it is slightly cheaper.  If you wish to host an Irish site I recommend a .ie name if possible or at least have your site hosted in Ireland for better SEO.

Your domain name needs to be renewed yearly or you lose title to it.

Hosting Service

There is usually a yearly hosting service fee in the region of 60-100 Euro.  If it is shared hosting then it will be at the lower end.

Web Designer Hours

For a basic site I will spend between 20 and 40 hours designing it putting the correct format in place and ensuring that some basic on page SEO is done and that the site is tested on different browsers and so on.  Multiply that by an hourly rate and you have how much the site costs.  It is in the region of 800 -1000 Euros.  But wait you can get it done for a fraction of that here’s how and why it is a bad idea.

  • Get an off shore designer to do it for a fraction of the cost: Good idea the hourly rate is far cheaper but your after sales support will be terrible and your interaction levels and stress level will be out of proportion to the quality of work.
  • You can create one for free with one of those free online services: Also an excellent idea.  You will have a site but nobody will ever find it – ever -.  These are glorified sub domains and are there for fun not to attract customers.  If you wnat the website just for fun then best of luck
  • Your Nephew is just out of college and.. :  Fabulous idea.  Ask them how many sites they have created before, what they know about SEO and how they plan to do their off page promotion.  If they look blankly you definitely have the right person.

Honestly creating SOMETHING that sits on the Internet isn’t that that hard (ook at Beebo for instance).  Its putting something worthwhile that is the hard part.
