Cost Benefit Analysis – AKA Common Sense

How much will it cost me?

chips

Price of a Bag of Chips

This question is often asked of me with a hint of fear in peoples voices when they ring or meet me to ask about the cost of designing a website.  My answer to people is simple.  It will cost them nothing in the end.  A website is not like a pair of shoes or a bag of chips that wear out or you eat and never see again.  It is a living breathing advertisement for your business.

Lets do some simple maths.  Lets take ACME Company who sell Widgets.  They Widgets cost say 100 Euro each.  Now if someone Googles Widgets and finds ACME company, calls them and buys a Widget then the website payment is reduced by this 100 Euro.  If they make a sale a week by this method over 12 months then that is 5200 Euro that the website has earned for them. In a very short time the website is like an employee earning money for ACME

Plug in what your service or business interaction costs to this equation and it tells you a website costs nothing.

These people who balk at the cost of a website are often the same people who happily pay 300 to 1000 Euro to put an advert in one of the many free newspapers that regularly gets dumped in your mailbox and then moves quickly to the recycle bin.

Take this a bit further – if they put an ecommerce solution on their site then the site works away in the background selling product for them FOREVER.

If you don’t agree with this then off with you and place an advert in the bottom left corner of the local paper and see how often your phone rings. I fee like some chips!
