5 Simple Website Design Tips

Sep 29, 2009   //   by Kieran   //   Website Design  //  No Comments

I readily give people free business website tips to help them understand the process of getting online and the potential obstacles.

Generally they are the same tips each time but they all have held true over the past few years and if kept to deliver a useful site.

What you have to do initially is aim low make a simple maintainable design and build on that principle.  So here are some tips that I think will give you the best website design.

Launch the Website and Make it Simple and Fast

Get a site up fast.  Don’t worry about colours, fonts or snappy graphics.  The website designer will help you later with this detail.  One page simple graphic, contact details, some simple text.  Add contact page, about page and some product information.  Make it easy to read and in English that people understand.  Don’t use complex language.  Assume people really don’t know too much about your business.  Educate them.

Create a blog on your Website

Blogs are golden methods of getting rich, keyword rich content on your site.  If you write well it should and must be a valuable resource to the cisitor.  When you write a blog post write it as if you are writing a letter to someone and you want them to enjoy it and understand easily what you are talking about.

Start writing posts to it.  Get good keyword penetration.  WordPress blogs can be set up real quick and there are some nice SEO plugins to help you along the way.  Post regularly (2-3 times per week at a minimum).  It is a habit that you can develop over time.  Be always thinking  of you can deliver a richer blog post.  I for instance wrote this blog post in September 2009 and revisited it in 2011 2 years later to update it and correct some (cough cough) typographical mistakes that had been there forever.

Have a Variety of Text and Imagery

Use short sentences.  Include some images.  Don’t ramble on.  Read your text a few times and you will usually find some simple mistakes.  Be like a newspaper editor with a red pen and mentally red line your content.  This original article had

Make Your Contact Details Prominent

Have as much access to your contact details on every page. I regularly  rant on about this and you would be amazed  how many sites don’t have their email or phone number on every page.  People expect it these days

Ask people to Review the Website

Friends, family, forums ask others to give you some feedback.

Now there are many other things you can do but the five tips above for a website design will be of great benefit.  Next time 5 free tools that will make you look like a super hero webmaster.

Track Your Visitors

Amazingly there are still too many business who do not know the amount of visitors that come to their site.  I know this as it is one of the first questions I ask people who contact me looking for a new design.  They generally either never installed a package like Google Analytics or have it installed and don’t refer to it.
