There are a lot of night classes out there teaching HTML, how to create your first website and the basics of the Internet. I think this is a great idea as it demystifies the whole area. I applaud all those teachers and what they teach.
However with it comes the danger that a lot of people think that they can create a website. Well of course they can create HTML pages and make them look to their eyes but there are a lot of other steps to making the site effective. This is often where the course I mention leave people short. There are not too many schools of website design out there. Practice and knowledge gained over time is what makes a good designer.
The best way to learn more is to have a goal for your website. Sit down and write down the 5 main things you want to get out of the site. If you can’t write 5 then you amy not need one right away. Here are 5 that I can think of right away.
- Communicating status updates
- Making school,business, product information available quickly
- Promoting your school,business, club
- Directions or map to where your business is
- Your phone number – yes quicker to say Google “My Business” and all our contact details will be there.
