To CMS or Not CMS

I currently have two small jobs in my in-tray.  They are basically making some text and image updates to an existing website.  So what you say?

Well the thing is that both sites already have a CMS installed for the website owners.  I did not design the site in the first place so the site owner obviously paid for the CMS as part of their fee.

So basically they paid the money and don’t use the CMS they paid for in the first place.  Both clients KNOW they have a CMS but choose not to actually use it.

There are a lot of changes but 80-90% of them are text that can easily be updated using the WYSWYG editor.  But why did they bother paying the money?

People think they will have the time to update their sites and in the end don’t

Like the two clients here they are busy running their business.  It probably sounded attractive to them to have this CMS functionality when they were being sold the site but in the end they ended up not using it.

So think hard before paying EXTRA for a CMS.  If it is standard good but don’t go off and pay more for it if you do not intend to use.  Not sure if you will?.  Here is a rule of thumb.  If you do not like using a PC and the most you do is read e-mail 2-3 times a week and really do not LIKE using a PC then don’t waste your money.  You will end up paying someone like me to the updates wither way.
