How to create a blog category in WordPress

You want to organise your blog posts properly. Categories do that. Once you set them up, posting becomes cleaner and your site makes more sense.

Method 1: Create a category from WordPress dashboard

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard.

  2. Go to Posts → Categories.

  3. In the Name field, type your category name.

  4. The Slug will auto-fill. You can leave it as is.

  5. If needed, choose a Parent Category.

  6. Leave the description empty unless you really need it.

  7. Click Add New Category.

Your category is created.

Method 2: Create a category while writing a post

  1. Go to Posts → Add New.

  2. On the right side, find the Categories box.

  3. Click Add New Category.

  4. Enter the category name.

  5. Choose a parent if required.

  6. Click Add New Category.

  7. Tick the checkbox to assign it to the post.

The category is saved automatically.

Method 3: Set a default category

  1. Go to Settings → Writing.

  2. Find Default Post Category.

  3. Select the category you want.

  4. Click Save Changes.

Any post without a selected category will use this one.

Method 4: Create sub-categories

  1. Go to Posts → Categories.

  2. Enter the sub-category name.

  3. Select a Parent Category from the dropdown.

  4. Click Add New Category.

Sub-categories help when topics get messy.

Method 5: Edit or delete categories

  1. Go to Posts → Categories.

  2. Hover over a category name.

  3. Click Edit, Quick Edit, or Delete.

Deleting a category does not delete posts. They move to the default one.
