Yes — you absolutely can use your existing domain name with Shopify. In fact, connecting your own domain (for example, yourbusiness.ie or yourbusiness.com) is strongly recommended. It gives your store a professional, trustworthy appearance and helps with SEO compared to the default myshopify.com subdomain.
How Domain Connection Works with Shopify
When you set up a Shopify store, it’s automatically assigned a free subdomain in the format: yourstore.myshopify.com. This is fine for testing and development, but before you go live you’ll want to connect a proper custom domain. Shopify supports two main options:
Option 1: Connect Your Existing Domain to Shopify
If you already own a domain through a registrar like GoDaddy, Register365, IE Domain Registry, Blacknight, or any other provider, you can connect it to your Shopify store by updating the DNS settings. This typically involves:
- Updating the A Record to point to Shopify’s IP address
- Adding a CNAME record for the www version of your domain
- Waiting for DNS propagation (usually 24–48 hours but often faster)
Option 2: Transfer Your Domain to Shopify
Alternatively, you can transfer your domain directly to Shopify so that everything is managed in one place. This makes renewals simpler but isn’t always necessary. Note that .ie domains have specific transfer rules through the IE Domain Registry (IEDR), so this option is less common for Irish businesses.
What About .ie Domains?
If your business operates in Ireland, a .ie domain is excellent for local SEO and trust signals. It tells Google and your customers that you are an Irish business. .ie domains are managed through the IEDR and can absolutely be pointed to a Shopify store. You’ll need access to your domain registrar’s DNS management panel to make the connection.
SSL Certificate
Once your custom domain is connected to Shopify, an SSL certificate (the padlock that appears in browsers) is automatically issued and managed by Shopify. This is essential for customer trust and required for accepting online payments.
