How does Shopify handle VAT for Irish businesses selling to EU customers?

Table of Contents

If you run an Irish eCommerce business and sell to customers in other EU countries, understanding how Shopify handles VAT is essential. Since the EU VAT reforms that came into effect in July 2021, the rules around cross-border B2C sales have changed significantly — and Shopify has built-in tools to help you stay compliant.

The EU VAT One Stop Shop (OSS) Explained

Under the new EU rules, if your total cross-border B2C sales to EU customers (outside Ireland) exceed €10,000 per year, you must charge VAT at the rate applicable in each customer’s country — not at the Irish rate. So if you sell a product to a customer in Germany, you may need to charge German VAT (currently 19%), not Irish VAT at 23%.

This is where the VAT One Stop Shop (OSS) scheme comes in. Instead of registering for VAT in every EU country you sell to, Irish businesses can register for OSS in Ireland through Revenue’s MyAccount or ROS portal. You then file a single quarterly OSS return covering all your EU sales, and Revenue distributes the VAT to the relevant countries on your behalf.

How Shopify Supports EU VAT Compliance

Shopify has built-in EU VAT features that help Irish businesses manage this complexity:

  • Automatic tax calculation – Shopify can automatically apply the correct VAT rate based on the customer’s delivery address for EU countries
  • EU VAT tax overrides – You can set specific rates per country or region
  • Inclusive vs exclusive pricing – You can configure whether displayed prices include VAT (required for B2C in the EU)
  • Tax reports – Shopify generates reports showing tax collected by country, which are useful when filing your OSS return
  • VAT number validation – For B2B sales, Shopify can validate EU business VAT numbers (VIES validation), allowing you to apply zero-rated VAT for verified business customers

Shopify’s EU VAT Limitations

While Shopify handles much of the complexity, it’s important to understand what it doesn’t do automatically:

  • Shopify does not file your OSS return for you — that’s still done through Revenue
  • Complex product-specific reduced rates require manual configuration
  • The system works best when set up correctly by someone with knowledge of Irish and EU tax rules
